SAMPLE KINDERGARTEN AND GRADES 1-2 SEASON PRACTICE PLAN  ( 6 PRACTICES)

 
PRACTICE 1  
 
One hour practice
 
1) Introductions (10 minutes)
Coach and player introductions.
Play game- Toss a Name
 
2)Explain Code of Conduct (ROOTS) and Philosophy of Program (ELM) (10 minutes)
 
3)Explain and demonstrate throwing and catching (catching to the stick side/dominant side) (25 minutes)
 
Do the drill: Partner Pass
 
Do the drill: Monkey in the Middle
 
4)Scrimmage (15 minutes)
 
Explain they will be playing 4 on 4.  Start the scrimmage with one team taking the ball out.  To encourage a variety of kids getting the ball you can set a rule that there has to be 2 or 3 passes before a player can shoot.
 
 
PRACTICE 2  
 
One hour practice
 
1) Review throwing and catching (10 minutes)
 
Do the drill Partner Pass
 
2)Review Code of Conduct (ROOTS) and Philosophy of Program (ELM) ( 5 minutes)
 
3)Explain and demonstrate the “ready position” and two-handed horizontal and vertical cradling. (20 minutes)
 
Have players practice cradling while standing still.
 
Play the game Cradling Lines Relay Race.
 
4) Explain and demonstrate scooping a ground ball. (10 minutes)
 
Do the drill:  Individual Scooping and Cradling
 
5)Scrimmage (15 minutes)
 
 
PRACTICE 3
 
One hour practice
 
1) Review throwing and catching. Also explain and demonstrate how to catch to the off-stick side and how to catch low throws.  (15 minutes)
 
Do the drill: Coach Toss
 
Do the drill:  Partner Pass
 
2)Review two-handed horizontal and vertical cradling (15 minutes)
 
Have players practice cradling while standing still.
 
Play the game: Cradling Lines Relay Race.
 
3)Review scooping a ground ball. (15 minutes)
 
Do the drill:  Individual Scooping and Cradling
 
Play the game: Ground Ball Relay Race.
 
4)Scrimmage (15 minutes)
 
 
PRACTICE 4
 
One hour practice
 
1) Review throwing and catching. Also review how to catch to the off-stick side and how to catch low throws.  (15 minutes)
 
Do the drill: Coach Toss
 
Do the drill:  Partner Pass
 
2)Review scooping a ground ball.  Build on scooping technique by explaining how to kick the ball or to hit it with the stick to get it into a better scooping position. (20 minutes)
 
Do the drill:  Individual Scooping and Cradling with the Kicking and Hitting Ball With the Stick Variation
 
Play the game: Ground Ball Relay Race
 
Play the game: Steal the Bacon
 
3) Review Two-Handed Horizontal and Vertical Cradling (10 minutes)

PRACTICE 5
 
One hour practice
 
1)Review scooping. (10 minutes)

2)Defense.  Explain and demonstrate defensive stance and defensive footwork (shuffling).  Also explain stick positioning (stick out). (15 minutes)
 
Do the drill: Defensive Shuffle Drill
 
3)Dodging. Explain and demonstrate an “inside and out dodge.” (20 minutes)
 
Do the drill: Partner Dodge
 
Do the drill: 1 v 1 From In Front of the Net
 
4)Scrimmage (15 minutes)
 
 
PRACTICE 6
 
One hour practice
 
1)Explain and demonstrate shooting. (20 minutes)
 
Do the drill: Scoop and Shoot
 
Play the game:  Shoot Out
 
2) Dodging. Review “inside and out dodge.” Explain and demonstrate a “face dodge”  (15 minutes)
 
Do the drill: Partner Dodge (using a face dodge)
 
3)Defense. Review  defensive stance, footwork (shuffling) and stick positioning (stick out). (10 minutes)
 
Do the drill: Defensive Shuffle Drill
 
4)Scrimmage (15 minutes)
